Mowing, brush and snow for the whole place

Sorensen Land & Snow mows pastures, clears brush, thins around buildings and plows long drives in the Bitterroot Valley. Three people, a short list of machines, and a written estimate before anything starts.

  • Pasture mowing
  • Brush clearing
  • Defensible space
  • Plowing

What decides the price

Four things set the price of an acre

Two acres of kept pasture and two acres of overgrown brush are not the same day's work. We price from what the ground and the growth ask of the machine, and the estimate names each one.

  • Lightest

    Kept pasture

Level or gently rolling ground that gets mowed every year. A tractor deck or a zero-turn does it in passes, and the price follows the acres.

    • Fence lines and trees are trimmed by hand

    • The lightest job per acre

  • Heavier

    Tall grass and weeds

A field that skipped a year or two. Thick, tall cover takes a slower pass, sometimes two, and a bag or a pile at the end.

    • Thistle and knapweed pull the machine down

    • Wet ground can hold the job

  • Heaviest

    Brush and saplings

Blackberry, willow, chokecherry and small pine need a brush mower or hand saws, then chipping or hauling.

    • Stems over a few inches are cut by hand

    • Where the pile goes is part of the price

  • Always

    Slope, rocks and gates

Steep ground, ditches, rock and tight gates slow every machine, and some ground needs a trimmer and a person on foot.

    • We walk it first and tell you what we won't run

    • Access decides which machine can come

What we do

Four jobs on the same ground

One crew and one phone number for the whole year on the place.

  • Green riding mower cutting a grass field beside a rope fence

    Pasture and acreage mowing

Fields, orchards, lanes and lots, cut on a schedule or once a year. Trimming around fences, trees and outbuildings comes with it.

    • Single cuts and regular visits

    • Gates and animals handled before we start

    See services
  • Small green tractor with an orange tiller attachment working through long grass

    Brush clearing and clean-up

Overgrown fence lines, ditches and corners, cut back and chipped or hauled. We don't burn piles.

    • Chipped on site or hauled away

    • Written scope before work starts

    How we price brush
  • Hillside neighborhood among trees and brush overlooking a valley

    Defensible space

Grass cut short, ladder fuel limbed up and brush thinned in zones around the house and outbuildings. An add-on to a visit or a job on its own.

    • Done in zones out from the building

    • A written description for your insurer

    Defensible space
  • Two snowy houses with garages, evergreens and a cleared driveway

    Snow plowing

Long drives, farm lanes and yards, on a seasonal contract or when the route has room. The trigger depth is in writing.

The add-on

Add defensible space to a mowing visit

Cut grass and thinned brush near a building give a fire less to burn. We do it in zones, starting at the walls and working out.

The work follows the usual three bands around a structure: bare, non-burning ground right at the walls, short grass and spaced shrubs next, and thinned brush and limbed-up trees beyond. Clearing does not make a house fireproof, so we don't promise that, and we won't promise a lower insurance bill. We write down what was done, with photos, for you and for your insurer.

  • Dead leaves and needles raked from roofs, decks and gutters on request

  • Limbs trimmed up from the ground in the nearest trees

  • Grass cut short and shrubs spaced out in the middle band

  • Brush thinned, chipped or hauled in the outer band

The snow contract

Settle the winter before the first storm

A seasonal agreement spells out what sends the truck, what gets plowed, and where your drive sits on the route.

The agreement names the snow depth that sends the plow, what is cleared (the drive, the turnaround, the walk to the door), whether sand or salt goes down, and the order of the route. Sign-up closes on a date written into the agreement so the route is built ahead of time. After that, one-time plows are taken when the route has room. Per-push or seasonal, the way you pay is in the agreement too.

  • Trigger depth named in writing

  • What is plowed, shoveled and sanded

  • Where you sit on the route

  • The close date for sign-up

Who comes out

Lars and two on the crew

Lars Sorensen started the business after the Army and a stretch of working other people's ground. Bailey and Nils run the machines.

You will meet one of the three at the walk-through and the same people on the job. We take on only as much as three people can do properly, which is why spring and fall fill early.

  • The person who walks the ground writes the estimate

  • The same crew on every visit

What neighbors say

“The back field was waist-high thistle and blackberry along the whole fence. Bailey ran the brush mower down the line, Nils hauled the pile, and the invoice matched the estimate.”

Tanner B.Five acres near Woodside

“The agreement named the snow depth that sends the truck out. The first heavy morning the drive was open before I left for work, all the way to the road.”

Ingrid O.Long driveway near Conner

“They thinned the pines and limbed up around the cabin, chipped it all, and told me plainly what they would not cut near the creek.”

Questions

Before you call

How do you price an acre?

From what the ground and the growth ask of the machine: slope, rocks, how tall and thick the cover is, how many gates and obstacles, and how far the pile has to go. Two acres of kept pasture and two acres of blackberry are different days. The written estimate lists what drove the number.

How soon can you start, and how long will it take?

The estimate gives a start window and a finish window. Mowing runs from green-up through fall, brush work and thinning go best before fire season and after the ground firms up, and wet or frozen ground can move a date. We tell you when it moves.

What should I do before you come?

Move livestock to another field, unlock the gates, and mark wells, septic tanks, drain fields, buried lines and anything you want left alone. Tell us about the dog, the bull and the wet spot by the culvert.

Does clearing around my house lower my insurance?

We can't say. Check with your insurer, and ask what they want to see. We will write up exactly what was cleared and where, with photos, to hand them.

When does the snow contract close?

On a date written in your agreement, so the route is built before the first storm. After that we may take a one-time plow when the route has room.
